Things to Do at Pier 19 Galveston: Seafood, Ships & Scenic Views

Savoring the Salt Air: A Day on the Docks in Galveston, Texas

There’s just something magical about Galveston. The salty breeze, the shrimp boats lined up like they’ve got stories to tell, and that feeling of being just far enough away from the hustle to breathe finally. I spent a sunny afternoon down by the marina, and y’all—it was precisely the reset my soul needed.

Shrimp boats and yachts docked at Pier 19 in Galveston, Texas, with the Ocean Star Museum and a cruise ship in the background.

🌊 The View: Shrimp Boats, Cruise Ships & That Iconic Oil Rig

We kicked back near Pier 19, one of my favorite places to sit and be. It’s got that perfect mix of working harbor charm and vacation-vibe energy. You can watch the fishing boats roll in, see the cruise ships in the distance, and yep—that towering oil rig? That’s the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum. Only in Texas, right?

Whether you’re into maritime museums or want a cool photo op, it’s worth the stroll. And let’s be honest—I took about 47 pictures trying to get the seagulls to cooperate. Spoiler: they did not.

🦐 Lunch with a View

We grabbed a table outside at Katie’s Seafood House (highly recommend!). They literally serve seafood straight from their dock. I had the blackened shrimp tacos and y’all… I don’t know if it was the seasoning or the sea air, but I could’ve cried. (And by “cried,” I mean I considered ordering a second round.)

Pro Tip: If you’re sitting outside, wear a hat and order the frozen cocktail. You’re welcome. 😎

🎣 Travel Tip: There are dolphin tours and harbor cruises that leave from this area. Perfect for kiddos or if you’re like me and just want to yell “DOLPHIN!” every time you see one.

🛍️ Don’t Skip the Souvenirs

After lunch, we wandered into a few of the shops along Harborside Drive. Think nautical everything, handmade soaps that smell like summer, and beachy décor that made me want to redecorate my entire house in driftwood and starfish.

And yes—I bought earrings because it’s not a beach trip if you don’t come back with something shiny.

I left that dock with a full belly, a little sun on my shoulders, and a lot of gratitude in my heart. Galveston has a way of slowing life down for a moment. If you’re craving coastal charm, fresh seafood, and a break from your to-do list—put Pier 19 on your map.

Now, who’s coming with me next time?
